Trinity Mirror takes Editorial Leaders Programme multimedia

Trinity Mirror Regionals is this month launching a course with the University of Central Lancashire to help senior editorial staff at the group understand the challenges of multimedia.

Delegates on the Trinity Mirror Regionals Editorial Leaders Programme will undertake three, week-long residentials over a year with some studies being taken over the internet.

The course, being taken by 13 “key” editorial staff from TMR, mainly deputy or assistant editors, leads towards a post-graduate certificate qualification.

It replaces the publisher’s former in-house programme Today’s Editor and aims to better prepare potential managers for the multi media age. Modules cover how to manage budgets and editorial strategies.

Senior executives at Trinity have worked with academics at UClan to set up the course and will continue to be involved throughout the course.

TMR editorial director Neil Benson said: “We have always paid a great deal of attention to staff development, and Today's Editor has been a very effective way of developing our top talent.

“However, with the industry undergoing such radical change, we felt it was time to look for a new type of programme that will equip our next generation of newsroom leaders with all the key managerial skills, allied to a strongly enhanced understanding of journalism in the multimedia context.

“We were very keen that the programme should be set in the Trinity Mirror context, so we have arranged for interactive sessions with our senior editorial, digital, multimedia and marketing people to be built in. There will also be visits and working sessions involving very senior people at the corporate level.”

Each delegate has been allocated an in-house mentor so their course learning can be applied directly to the newsroom.
